Promoting the business of grasscutter production in West-Africa
An international forum entitled ‘Promoting the business of grasscutter production in West-Africa’ shall be convened in Accra, Ghana from 12 to 16 December 2005.
The rearing of grasscutters as a business is increasingly taken up by farmers and others. FAO, through the Telefood programme, is supporting small scale grasscutter rearing activities throughout Ghana. This is a viable business in many African countries, although experience shows that the industry is facing challenges in housing, breeding stock, financing and marketing. It is for this reason that an international forum is being organised in Ghana to promote grasscutter farming along effective business approaches. The rearing of grasscutters aids in promoting sound environmental management (eg combating bushfire), contributes to moderating the bushmeat crisis and increases the supply and consumption of protein. Therefore, there is a large role to play by governments and partners to encourage the grasscutter rearing business.
The objective of the forum is to exchange practical, technical and scientific experiences and information on production, processing and marketing of the grasscutter, as well as creating a platform for advocacy, sensitization and education.
Hosted by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Animal Production Directorate in Ghana, the forum is jointly organized by the Center for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Animal Research Institute (ARI), Ghana; Ministère d’Agriculture d’Elevage et de la Pêche (MAEP), Bénin; Institute Nationale de la Recherche Agricole du Bénin (INRAB); Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO); Market Oriented Agriculture Programme (GTZ, DED), Ghana; Programme de Conservation et de Gestion des Ressources Naturelles, Bénin (GTZ, KfW) Bénin; HEIFER International Ghana, Conservation International, Ghana and the Grasscutter Farmers Associations Brong Ahafo and Greater Accra. Target beneficiaries are grasscutter farmers or organizations and related service providers, namely extensionists, researchers, teaching institutions, input suppliers, financial institutions, supporting NGO’s, Governmental Institutions and Development Partners supporting the production, processing and marketing of quality grasscutter meat.
