Grasscutter meat constitutes an important food for many Africans and is greatly appreciated in Western and central Africa. At full maturity, grasscutter weighs an average of 9 kg.It is observed to be a good source of lean meat, having low cholesterol content because it stores its fat mainly around the intestines, leaving relatively little in the muscles.
The nutritional value of its meat is comparable to that of the beef, pork and mutton; it is, in fact higher in some cases, hardly ever lower.
The demand for grasscutter meat is so large that it is not being met. Market for it already exist over most of Africa.
Apart from the money that can be realized from the sale, it is one of those rare animals that are almost wholly edible; most of its parts can be eaten (smoked) the only exceptions being the claws and pattlet of faeces and fur (which are used in traditional medicine). Their stomach and gut contents are also used to flavour food, while pancreas is believed to be rich in insulin which can be used to produce a drug used in curing diabetes.
Depending on your experience, grasscutter can also be packaged to outfits as pepper soup meat, suya, frozen or dried meat. Most Chinese are looking for the meat as regular meal and also to entertain most of their guests from abroad.
If you rear grasscutter in commercial quantity under good hygienic condition, fast food restaurants such as Mr. Biggs, Tantalizers, Sweet Sensation etc will be your regular customers. They will only need your assurance of regular supply per week. There is also good market for grasscutter meat in the international market if only you can do a good packaging.
