The secret to success in grass-cutter business is having appropriate technology and putting in place adequate management.
Learning the Technology:
The starting point before you start to rank money from the idea is learning the technology from the expert by way of one or two day workshop
Housing:
The farmer will put in place the housing of his/her choice (battery cage or hutch type)
Breeding Stock:
The farmer will buy at least two families of grass-cutters, which are two males and eight females. The animal will be put in their respective houses – each family to a cage.
Knowledge of the Animal:
The farmer needs to know the animal thoroughly in terms of their feeding habits, behavior in their normal/natural habitat and reproductive behavior.
Sound Management:
Once the management put in place by the farmer is sound that is (appropriate housing and feeding), the success rate of the business is usually high.
Ready To Mate Animal:
As expected of a green horn farmer, he needs to start with what is technically called ready – to – mate animals, that is animals that are five months old and above. Supposing a farmer starts with two families of ready – to – mate age animal, they will litter (i.e reproduce) twice in one year.
Appropriate Housing and Good Feeding:
Two things that enhance the reproduction of animals are appropriate housing and good feeding. The litter rate of the animal is between 1 – 10 per doe (female grass-cutter).
If all the eight does in a two families litter, there is the possibility of getting a total of 32 offspring litter, there is the possibility of getting a total of 32 offspring which add up to 42 when the parents are added.
Second Litter:
At the second litter of the parents stock, the first offspring will have matured enough to also litter. If they litter an average of four animals and assuming the ratio of male to female (buck to doe) is 11-1, it means 16 will litter 64 offspring (that is 16 by 4).
Arithmetically, this gives us a total of 140 animals in the farm after 12 months. That is, the parent litter twice in 12 points at the rate of four young ones per eight does – 64 (32 plus 32).
The first litter of the parent stock of 32 animals will yield at least 16 does. These sixteen will reproduce during the second litter of their parents. If they litter an average of four like their mothers they would have produced 64 animals (that is 16 by 4).
With the 10 animals, the farmer stated with, he will be having 138 that is 64 plus 64 plus 10 at the end of twelve months.
This is incredible. By the second litter, farmer can now sell off 64 animals to both breeders and restaurants/hoteliers.
At the third litter of the parent stock, the total litter in the farm will be about 416 animals. Moreover, the figure could be more if appropriate management is put in place. Out of this, the farmer will gross at least 320,000:00 naira if he decides to sell off 128 of the lot. That is if he sells at 2500:00 per animal.
